Saturday has been endorsed by the San Francisco Board of Supervisors
as "End the War in Iraq" Day after it passed a resolution
yesterday introduced by Supervisor Tom Ammiano.
The A.N.S.W.E.R. Coalition, a group staunchly opposed to the
war, has organized a march and rally Saturday at San Francisco
Civic Center.
"The endorsement by the board of supervisors will be specifically
for this event,'' Ammiano said. "It is a way for protesters
to register public opinion and spread the word about the event.''
Saturday is a day of national protest with events being coordinated
nationwide, according to Sarah Sloan of A.N.S.W.E.R. The demonstration
in San Francisco is a regional event and organizers expect people
from as far away as Oregon and Nevada to attend.
"We expect thousands of people to show up because people
across the nation are against this war," Sloan said.
Protesters will gather at 11 a.m. in Civic Center Plaza and will
then march to Mission Dolores Park at 12:30 p.m., according to
Sloan.
Anti-war protester Cindy Sheehan is expected to speak, as well
as U.S. Congresswoman Barbara Lee, D-Oakland.
