Two people are dead in a 31-vehicle pileup that has closed northbound
U.S. Highway 101 just past the Waldo Tunnel this morning, said
California Highway Patrol.
According to CHP, icy and slushy road conditions were probably
what caused the massive pileup just before 2:40 a.m. on a downhill
grade near Sausalito.
All northbound and southbound lanes are closed. Motorists traveling
north from San Francisco are being diverted at the Alexander Avenue
off ramp. Vehicles traveling south are being detoured at the Marin
City exit, CHP said.
A spokeswoman for the Golden Gate Bridge said traffic on the
bridge has not been affected by the closures.
The highway will be closed indefinitely. Medical personnel are
currently assisting "a lot of people," and tow trucks
are trying to clear the area.
A Sig-alert was issued at 2:44 a.m.
