MAYOR'S OFFICE CAPTURES FIRST VICTORY WITH POWERFUL OFFENSIVE DISPLAY

October 10, 2005

Fort Scott Ball Field (San Francisco):

MO' Better Blues bested the Master Batters in an impressive first game of the season in San Francisco's Presidio last night 12-9. The much celebrated Mayor's Office softball team demonstrated impressive offensive power, racking up 9 runs in the first three innings of the game.

Base runners for the Mayor's Office were thick as the Presidio fog whipping through the field at game time. Rio Foster and Carmen Chu, 1 and 2 in the MO' Better batting order, combined for four runs early on. Despite ceding three runs to the Master Batters in the first inning, MO' Better turned on its formidable offense and never looked back.

Justin Rojas showed why he is one of the most exciting rookies in the league-- smashing a long home run to center followed up by an aggressive run at second base in his next at bat. He was called out on that play for sliding into second (league rules limit sliding into bases).

Ahsha Safaii and Rio Foster platooned at shortstop and anchored a MO' Better defense that appeared shaky at times but got more solid as the game progressed. Safaii expressed little concern about defensive lapses after the game. "Listen, we had a few defensive breakdowns which hurt us--particularly in the sixth inning. But it's nothing we can't tighten up though before next week."

Pitching was solid for MO' Better-- with the cagey veteran Alex Tourk on the mound for the season debut. Tourk showed great control and a impressive repertoire of off-speed pitches-- logging four strike outs and only one walk. He also pleased fans with two tricky defensive grabs coming off the mound.

MO' Better Manager Wade Crowfoot was satisfied with the victory. '"It was a helluva effort. Coming into the season, I knew Tourksey can give us a solid six or seven innings on the mound each night. It's up our bats to take us over the top. They did that and then some tonight."

Next up for the Newsom Nation is Barclay's Global at 8:30PM next Monday, October 17. Restricted view seating is reported to be still available for that game.

Stats: HRs - Rojas (1), Crowfoot (1), Homsey (1)
W - Tourk (1-0)
