anniversary of marriage licenses

SAN FRANCISCO (BCN) - Three same-sex couples who traveled
to San Francisco City Hall three years ago today for marriage
certificates returned to the site of their nuptials this morning
to share their stories in a roundtable discussion with Mayor Gavin
Newsom.

Study finds marijuana effective
in treating AIDS patients

A study conducted at San Francisco General Hospital's Clinical
Research Center and published today in the journal Neurology found
that smoking marijuana effectively relieved the symptoms of HIV-associated
sensory neuropathy, an extremely painful peripheral nerve disorder.
An estimated 3 to 4 million people in the United States suffer
from neuropathic pain and as many as 37 percent of people living
with HIV/AIDS use marijuana to treat neuropathy and other symptoms
associated with the disease, according to Americans for Safe Access,
a medical marijuana advocacy group.

Bicyclist shot in San Francisco's Ingleside
dies

SAN FRANCISCO (BCN) - A woman shot in
the back of the head nearly two weeks ago in San Francisco's
Ingleside Heights neighborhood has died, according to the medical
examiner's office.
Jennifer Merritt, 31, was found next to her bicycle
near the intersection of Randolph and Head streets around 6
a.m. on Jan. 31, according to police.

SANTA CLARA (BCN) - Former New York City
mayor Rudy Giuliani said today that he is "100 percent''
running for president and he thinks California is a great place
to have an early presidential primary.
Giuliani told a lunchtime crowd of approximately
500 Silicon Valley business and technology leaders that he is
in the race for the Republican nomination to succeed President
George W. Bush even if he has not made a formal announcement
yet. He joked that he would probably make his formal announcement
in "100 different places,'' to get the maximum amount of
media attention.

The owner of a San Francisco landmark restaurant
is offering $25,000 to any amateur Sam Spade who can track down
a replica of the famed Maltese Falcon.
John's Grill, a century-old restaurant and home
to a museum dedicated to detective novel author Dashiell
Hammett, became a crime scene today after workers noticed
over the weekend that the statuette and 15 rare books by and
about Hammett.
