Green, Libertarian and Republican candidates
pen letter to Pelosi to debate the issues
October 11, 2006
San Francisco -- Candidates for the 8th congressional
district delivered a letter to the office of Congresswoman Nancy
Pelosi, challenging her to debate the issues.
Signed by Republican candidate Mike Denunzio, Green candidate
Krissy Keefer and Libertarian candidate Philip Berg, the letter
was hand delivered by Berg and Keefer earlier today.
The challengers have asked Pelosi for her response by October
18, to provide enough lead time to arrange for a public debate
and in time before voters go to the polls on November 5.
The candidates plan to hold a press conference when they receive
Pelosi's response.
The letter follows:
Dear Representative Pelosi:
We the undersigned candidates address you on behalf of the 342,414
registered voters in Congressional District 8.
We are certified by the California Secretary of State as candidates
for the Green, Republican and Libertarian parties of San Francisco.
We respectfully request that you participate in a debate with
us at a time and place in San Francisco that is convenient to
your schedule.
In 1987 you ran for Congress in San Francisco to be our
voice in Washington, DC. The voters of San Francisco deserve
to hear our voices in a debate.
There are critical reasons for you to respect this request. This
election is about war and peace, life and death, and the economic
wellbeing of 300 million Americans.
The Republican Party, the Green Party and the Libertarian parties
have profound differences with the Democratic Party on issues
of domestic and foreign policy. Members of these parties believe
strongly that their voices and their ideas about these issues
should be heard. And well they should.
The Green Party has a major following in San Francisco. In 2003
its candidate for mayor won 47.5 percent of the vote. The Republican
Party is represented by the president and governor and has an
expressive role in public policy in San Francisco. The Libertarian
party has views it believes are highly principled on fundamental
issues of health care, education and welfare.
We are scheduling a joint press conference to announce your decision
on a debate. We expect a response by Wednesday, October 18.
Sincerely,
Krissy Keefer; San Francisco Green Party
Mike DeNunzio; San Francisco Republican Party
Philip Berg; San Francisco Libertarian Party
