San Francisco Police Commissioner Joe Alioto-Veronese has pulled out of the Senate District 3 race.

“It’s a hard thing to do. I poured my heart into this,” Veronese told Fog City Journal.

Veronese cited former Assemblymember Joe Nation’s entry into the race February 9, as the primary reason for his withdrawal from the race.

“The landscape has changed since Joe Nation got into the race,” Veronese said. “This was the right move to make.”

A recent poll has Nation and horse favorite, Assemblymember Mark Leno, tied in a statistical dead heat with incumbent Senator Carole Migden lagging in third place.

Veronese, who said he raised $250,000 for his campaign, said he was gratified by the support he has received.

“This has been an amazing experience,” Veronese said. “Ultimately this decision was based upon being true to my supporters who have supported my ideas and my campaign.”

  1. To say the least I am surprised. A lot of money raised and I wonder where did it all go. $250,000 is difficult to raise and even more difficult to save.
I know in my own experience sometimes it is the race itself that makes you doubt if running is worthwhile when you can work on the sidelines.
So for the “loser” comment. try putting your name down next to the words Candidate’s Name and you will find the gut check isn’t so nice.

  2. YEAH!!! I spoke to Joe Alioto-Veronese right after a Police Commission hearing, on the anniversary of Idriss Stelley’s murder by the San Francisco Police, and right after Arnold Schwarzenegger had pushed his $7.7 billion new prison construction bill through the legislature, with many a political deal, and he, Joe Aliioto-Veronese, told me he was “glad the governor was taking the issue in hand.” And, just to be quite accurate here, the $7.7 billion in new prison construction funds would have been $8.9 billion with county matching funds. Last I heard, the courts had nixed it, but I’m still glad to hear the last of Joe Alioto-Veronese, who was glad to see the governor “taking this issue in hand,” in this State Senate race.

  3. In my humble opinion, one of the sentences in this article would be even better with the addition of the phrase “commissioned by the Leno campaign.”

I realize there’s a link provided, but I’m guessing not everyone has the time or inclination to follow it.

I should add that I’m not saying the poll numbers are necessarily inaccurate. I just like knowing where they come from, and think others might, too.

  4. Loser.
