Environmental Group Asserts Oil Giant Paying Writers to Pose as Journalists as Part of Public Relations Campaign

SAN FRANCISCO, Oct 24, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) — The environmental group Amazon Watch today called on Chevron and the San Francisco-based writer Pat Murphy to divulge their financial relationship in light of disclosures that Murphy’s website accepts fees for editorial control of news articles written under Murphy’s byline.

“Chevron’s public relations office and Pat Murphy appear to be engaged in an online deception,” said Mitch Anderson, an Amazon Watch official. “Murphy writes pro-Chevron articles under the masthead of a commercial blog cleverly designed to look like a newspaper.”

  1. I am glad that FogCityJournal and Marketwatch ran the news release from Amazon Watch. How interesting that Murphy doesn’t even deny taking money from Chevron.

For more about Chevron and their history of killing, see the award winning documentary from Amy Goodman “Drilling and Killing, Chevron and Nigeria’s Oil Dictatorship http://www.pacifica.org/programs/dn/030711.html.
There is also great info on the court case here http://justiceinnigeria.wordpress.com/

There is a rally at noon on Monday to support the Nigerians.

  2. Well,

I’ll be damned. I didn’t think Pat was smart enough to solicit a bribe. I understand that AIPAC is considering revoking his membership and giving him his foreskin back.

  3. You have as much chance finding news in a blue Valpak envelope than you do visiting the San Francisco Sentinel.

It has been all downhill for that site since Pat fell in love with Mayor Gavin and decided to dedicate himself to the hopeless cause. For the last several years the “Scent” has engaged in plagiarism and selling itself to advocacy groups like Joe Alioto Jr, Jewish panic button association, League of gay couture philanthropists, and most notably Chevron.

It is the memories of the better days that occasionally brings me back to that site. The space between visits lengthens. It is sad because there was a time when Murph worked hard and deserved acclaim and respect for providing SF with City Hall news that wasn’t being covered elsewhere. Murphy shouldn’t be going out on his hands and knees but that’s that for Pat. Sad.
