From South Beach Mission Bay Business Association
August 16, 2010
On Monday, August 16, the South Beach Mission Bay Business Association will host a District 6 supervisor candidate forum at KickLabs (250 Brannan Street) from 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm to focus on top candidates’ visions for the area’s business. Participants include District 6 supervisor candidates Jane Kim, Jim Meko, Theresa Sparks, Debra Walker, and Elaine Zamora. After networking and enjoying savory treats from Passion Café and wine courtesy of Hennessy’s Wines, candidates will discuss critical business issues. Media gem Melissa Griffin will moderate what is bound to be a lively discussion.
“District 6 is San Francisco’s fastest growing and most dynamic community – also referred to as the “Innovation Zone” in San Francisco…..The importance of electing a very business savvy District Supervisor is tantamount to our growth and success. With such a wide range of businesses in South Beach Mission Bay, the elected official will need to address the many economic issues facing our area,” said Katherine Webster, President of the South Beach Mission Bay Business Association, about the forum’s topic choice.
Co-sponsors of this event include: Market Street Association, Mission Merchants Association, Mid Market Community Benefits District, North of Market/Tenderloin Community Benefits District, South of Market Business Association, Tenderloin Merchants Association, Union Square Business Improvement District, Union Square Merchants Association, and Yerba Buena Community Benefit District. Refreshments and appetizers will be provided by the South Beach Mission Bay Business Association and Passion Cafe.
Attendees must be registered to attend. Space is limited. For additional information or to RSVP, please contact Katherine Webster at (650) 888-8377 or kwebster@storytellingmedia.com, or visit http://wwww.southbeachmissionbay.com/.

Patrick,
Don’t vote for me. I’m not even voting for me. This contest could actually come down to your using your RCV and whom you chose third. I run to challenge candidates at the forums and this year all of the major ones thus far aren’t allowing any of the low rent folks like myself to speak. If you ever needed proof that the rich control the electoral process here it is. The League of Women Voters, Human Services Network, Neighborhood Parks Council and others are requiring proof of a campaign worth 20 grand or more just to talk. I wonder if they favor land ownership as a pre-condition for people to vote?
I’m working on a counter move to keep their lawyers busy.
Go Giants!

You’re still my #2, for all the right and wrong reasons.
August 19, 2010 at 8:30 am
Patrick,
Close. I’m still backing Meko first because the district is all about land use and the conflict between residents and the forces of gentrification and Meko has proven himself to be perhaps the most reasoned negotiator between such interests in the City and certainly in D-6 over the last several decades.
I’m backing Keys second now for all of the reasons mentioned in the FCJ thread and Dean Clark third. All three very ‘real’ candidates. And, I know this district better than anyone in the City and I know what’s best for it.

First on your IRV: James (no bullshit) Keys.
Second on your IRV: h (full of it) brown
Third on your IRV; Anna ( heavy shit) Conda.
Vote for the good, the good vibes, the good times, or whatever, not any of these these ‘lesser evil’ unprincipled opportunists.
Sorry h but unfortunately Jim passed on a perfect opportunity to show cojones, make a powerful statement and say “hell no, I wont go”. What would he have lost compared to the cred he could have gained. Instead he allied himself with the rest of this sorry bunch …too bad.
August 18, 2010 at 8:31 am
Sadly,
Patrick’s right. No virgins left in the pack. Still, ya gotta go for the lesser of evils or sit it out and I’ve never been able to keep my mouth shut for long. So, while I doubt any of them bother wearing underwear any longer I continue to support:
First on your IRV: Jim (no drama) Meko
Second on your IRV: Debra (Dem hack) Walker
Third on your IRV: Jane (“New in town, sailor?) Kim
Sighhhhh,

I hope this is not reflective of how she would function as Supervisor, if elected, but I posted a brief criticism of Ms Walkers involvement in this charade on her FB page, it was pretty innocuous compared to the above. It posted briefly but then mysteriously ‘disappeared’. I realise it has become de rigueur for ‘the electeds’ to ignore, stifle or marginalise the voices and opinions of those who may question or oppose their actions and motivations, and primarily take their direction from ‘the connecteds’; However it is disturbing that this candidate appears to be starting her campaign in this way.
Just my 2c.

None of the ‘Sold Out Six’ who participated in this exclusive rigged downtown ‘debate’ are deserving of support from anyone who still professes to believe in progressive approaches and solutions to our problems. Just another bunch of self serving pols looking to get their snouts in the public trough no matter how co-opted they become in the process.
Shameful, shameless bunch of unprincipled opportunists.
August 17, 2010 at 3:28 am
You’re a hound, Patrick,
The woman’s a lawyer and unless she’s totally incompetent she’s gotta realize by now that she aided and abetted Zamora (another lawyer) and the rest in breaking the law regarding 501 (c) (3)’s. I’m curious to see how she writes it up.
It’s a good story and could have some impact upon how people like Zamora and Randy Shaw abuse their tax exempt status.

They also excluded Anna Conda. (I’m assuming Anna Conda’s still in the race, though I haven’t been hearing much about her.)
August 16, 2010 at 11:25 pm
@Ann,
I think you’re forgetting Glendon “Anna Conda” Hyde, but I think they were excluding Keys and Hyde more for perceived lack of viability than perceived anti-business stance. But again, you know how it is -who is a “serious” candidate depends on who the corporate power structure wants to be a serious candidate. Keys and Hyde are at least as viable as Elaine Zamora, but Zamora is the darling of the Chamber of Commerce, so she gets a seat and they don’t.
I would have gone -just to have the wine and cheese -but I thought my time was better spent knocking on doors for Rafael. Can’t wait for the writeup.

In my opinion, especially compared with 99.9% of those we might consider to be in ‘the other camp’; yes, I do find her to be smart, delightful humorous/witty at times. I get a kick out of some the observations she makes in her SF Execrable column.
Not exactly sure what role she may personally have in excluding Prog’s, as always I would appreciate your feedback. Being British I actually appreciate ‘siily snark’ at times, and as Richie Pryor’s character Mudbone once said, “Boy, it’s only life, and you cant go taking this shit too serious”.
Plus, as an old dog, like me, you have to admit she’s pretty damn easy on the eyes !!!
Luv ya dude.
WTF is up with our Timmy !!!
August 16, 2010 at 10:51 am
Patrick,
Do you ever read Griffin’s columns? She had virtually no knowledge of the BOS and communicates with silly snark. Her role in this continuing smothering of Prog candidates by shutting them out of forums is deplorable. I’ll be at 250 Brannan tonight to watch. You gonna be there? Guess what, you’re not invited cause her group is screening the audience having finished with banning most of the candidates.
Do you consider that ‘delightful’ and ‘smart’ and ‘humorous’?

Luke,
Welcome back. Bulldog will cover the forum if we are allowed entry. The link to pre-register doesn’t work.
Marc, Patrick … don’t panic. It’s early in the campaign. From now on we’ll picket those who don’t invite all candidates. What’s the name of that brass band available for stuff like that?

By excluding only James Keys, doesn’t this SBMBBA risk making him look like the only candidate that they think might be unwilling to bend to their will?
(Or, again, has someone else I’m forgetting been excluded? I believe Elihu dropped out and endorsed James.)
August 15, 2010 at 10:28 pm
Ah yes…..Sweet Melissa, so delightful to have someone so smart, opinionated, humorous and delicious with whom you can frequently disagree.
August 15, 2010 at 4:53 pm
Jane Kim, Jim Meko, Theresa Sparks, Debra Walker, and Elaine Zamora?
Why wasn’t James Keys invited to this shindig? Not thought to be business friendly?
There are so many candidates in this district, there must be some other aspirant else I’m forgetting, assumed to be business unfriendly, no?

storytellingmedia.com really says it all, what is it that “they” say, a gaffe is when the truth inadvertently spills out.

Geez,
Getting more big time every day. Not only are all the candidates not invited but neither is all the public. Sounds like a Pelosi event
And, the registration link bounces back when I ask it for info. Anyone know who this group is? Another Downtown pawn like Tourk’s SFYD?

Fuck that. Will D6 business be resident friendly is the more appropriate question.
Or will business buy into the Chamber of Commerce sponsored tea party ideology that all burdens of financing government shall fall upon the citizenry while all benefits of that largess shall accrue to corporations?
D6 hosts most businesses in San Francisco, takes the most impacts from ongoing businesses as well as new development, yet business expects for beleaguered taxpayers to subsidize their infrastructure so that they can make money.
Should D6 socialize the provision of infrastructure in order to promote privatized profit?
