Citing a change in circumstances, Quintin Mecke, the former aide to Assemblymember Tom Ammiano, today withdrew his candidacy in the race for District 5 Supervisor.
“Unfortunately, due to an unanticipated change in circumstances with my family, I have decided to withdraw from the District 5 race for Supervisor this November,” Mecke relayed via email. “While I had hoped to focus all my energy into the race this fall, I realized that with recent events that I would be unable to move forward with the commitment that is needed to run a successful campaign over the next 4 months.”
“We will be wrapping things up on the campaign in the coming days and I want to sincerely thank all of the friends, volunteers, endorsers and donors who have supported my campaign, we would not have gotten this far without you.
“I look forward to working closely with you in the future to ensure that District 5 and the city of San Francisco continues to be a leader for independent, progressive politics.”

The “nuances of bike policy”? It’s nothing but anti-carism, “taking space from cars,” as Andy Thornley put it. Mecke didn’t deviate at all from the Bicycle Coalition’s line a bit, but there are plenty of other groupthink progressives in the D5 race to carry that banner.

This is a sad day for San Francisco cyclists, as Quintin is one of the few political cyclists who actually gets the intricacies and nuances of bike policy.

I look forward to Mr Mecke’s future contributions to our city. He is a talented person with good values, and I wish him and his family the best.
