Calling its platform “offensive”, California Senator Leland Yee (D-San Francisco/San Mateo) issued the following statement today in response to the Republican Party platform approved this week at the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Florida.

“The Republican Party has adopted a platform that is not only counter to American prosperity, but it is counter to the ideals of our nation. They are wrong on issues of tax fairness, marriage equality, voter suppression, gun control, abortion rights, the environment, immigration, health care, and education.

“It is offensive to allow the rich to get richer while the poor get poorer; to deny individuals the right to marry; to prevent women from having control of their own bodies; to enact laws to suppress the votes of young people and the disadvantaged; to oppose the assault weapon ban; to degrade our environment by drilling off our coast and in the Arctic Wildlife Refuge; to preclude schools from offering family planning education, and to refuse a reasonable path to citizenship.

“I look forward to next week when the Democratic Party will adopt a platform that helps uplift our society and respects our diversity, as opposed to one that is backwards and, regressive.”

  3. In response to Troy Osborne (I clicked the Reply button but Disqus puts the comment up here):

Well that’s very R-partisan.  In reality, both of the pro-war, corporatist teams do that.  That’s being objective.  And both corporatist parties/teams are responsible for where we are today.  “Real leadership” (as I think you’re using the term) is a thing of the past in a corporatocracy which is what we have today in the U.S.

Yes, that will certainly happen.  Just as it has been with Obama and he’s the candidate Yee will be supporting.  Isn’t that insanity?  Doing
the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result?  Yee is concerned about “backwards and regressive,” from the Republican Party yet under the Obama regime and D and R congress the U.S. will have up to 30,000 (armed) drones spying domestically in coming years.  I’m
not sure what kind of change Yee is looking for.

A party platform is one thing.  Reality/policies are another.  Is Yee completely unaware that Mr Hopey-Changey has continued and expanded the
backward and regressive REPUBLICAN Bush regime’s agenda?  Where has Yee been not to
know that?  Not paying attention since Mr Change took office like the
other Obamabots?  Ask them anything in detail about what their savior Obama has done, and one gets a blank stare.  They haven’t a clue what he’s done and they don’t care.    To them as with the Republican supporters, it’s between corporatist pro-war D and R and those two corporatist teams and that’s it.  Insanity.

  7. Flash for Leland:  The Republican Party doesn’t care what he thinks.

He must be desperate for publicity if this is all he has.

    • Thank you, Lerey, for stating the Republican platform in one word. And, Karl Baldwin, thank you for again showing why Republicans always lose the women’s vote.
