Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger today announced $136 million in Proposition 1B funding for state transportation projects, including more than $60 million for Bay Area projects.

Schwarzenegger announced funding for a total of 99 projects at a San Diego news conference that was broadcast live on the governor’s Web site.

“With gas prices approaching $5 a gallon providing transportation . . . options is more important than ever,” Schwarzenegger said.

Among the projects receiving funds announced today were $36 million for BART station upgrades, $9.7 million for San Francisco Muni’s Metro East Light Rail Vehicle Facility, $8 million to help SamTrans replace 126 older buses with new energy efficient, cleaner burning buses and $6.7 million to the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority for construction of a pedestrian over-crossing of Monterey Highway and the Union pacific railroad tracks in South San Jose.

Caltrans Director Will Kempton said infrastructure projects such as those announced today help spur the state’s economy during tough times.

“For every billion dollars we can put out there in capital improvements that’s 18,000 jobs and that’s a conservative number,” Kempton said.

  1. this is bond money that is to be used for infrastructure, not for ongoing operations.

too bad the article does NOT mention the billions in cuts Green Arnie is making this year, on top of the ones he made last year that are screwing up transit all over the state.

and it’s too bad the article doesn’t mention Democratic complicity with it. All at a time when gas is a fortune and people are using transit more to save money.

  2. How about equalizing the fares on BART? It now costs $10 to ride roundtrip from Richmond to San Francisco on BART, and Richmond is the probably the poorest community in the East Bay.
