Mayor Gavin Newsom today appointed former Police Commissioner David Campos to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors.

Campos, who replaces Assemblymember-elect Tom Ammiano, won the District 9 race in November, defeating San Francisco School Board President Mark Sanchez and housing activist Eric Quezada.

The mayor is not obligated to appoint a replacement when a seat is vacated on the 11-member board, but Newsom did so when election results were certified Tuesday.

“That was the reason for the delay,” Newsom said, adding that Supervisor Bevan Dufty played a role in his decision to appoint Campos.

Newsom said District 1 Supervisor-elect Eric Mar, District 11 Supervisor-elect John Avalos, and District 3 Supervisor-elect David Chiu will be sworn into office January 8.

Before an estimated audience of as many as 150 attendees, Supervisor Campos thanked Newsom for the early appointment, characterizing his gesture as “gracious.”

“I think it says a lot about you Mr. Mayor,” Campos said. “It’s very gracious and generous.”

In that vein, Campos said he looked forward to a “good, positive, working relationship” with the mayor’s office “even at times when we may not agree.”

“I look forward to working with you over the next few years,” Campos added.

After thanking all of his supporters, Campos said: “I don’t know if it’s true or not, but I think I might be the first undocumented person to be elected to the Board of Supervisors.”

Campos then paid special homage to Ammiano calling him a “mentor,” an “inspiration,” and a “friend.”

Ammiano “truly embodies everything I want to be in terms of what it means to be an elected official and a public servant,” Campos said. “You are truly a legend.”

In closing, Campos thanked the residents of District 9 for their support in electing him to office.

“I will do my very best every single day to do the best job possible for you,” he said. “It is truly an honor beyond belief to serve District 9.”
