The New Hampshire State Senate today approved a bill that would make marriage between same-sex couples legal.
The bill, which passed 13-11, would establish a two-tiered marriage license system; one for civil marriages and the other for religious marriages.
“As expected, marriage equality took another step forward today with the support of the New Hampshire State Senate,” said California State Senator Mark Leno. “Equal protection under the law for all Americans should not sound like a radical notion, though, when elected officials support the concept, it still makes news.”
“Marriage equality is the future of our country just as ending the ban on inter-racial marriage was a half century ago,” Leno added. “The continued progress of the respect, dignity and validation of all loving and committed relationships is a reason to celebrate.”
The proposal must now be ratified by the house before the bill can be presented to Governor John Lynch for signature.
New Hampshire would be the fifth state to legalize same-sex marriage should the bill become law.
