As many as 200 footy fans descended on San Francisco Civic Center today all eager to watch under clear blue skies the second match of the 2010 World Cup between Uruguay and France.
The match was broadcast live on a giant monitor at no cost to taxpayers courtesy of SF Recreation and Parks in partnership with American Scores, a non-profit organization that teaches soccer to children in Bay Area public schools, and TeacherBus, a for-profit organization dedicated to combing recreation with education.
“The World Cup brings people from every nation together in our international city to celebrate the thrill of sport and the spirit of competition,” said Mayor Gavin Newsom. “There’s no greater sporting event than the World Cup and we hope soccer fans of all ages will come out to City Hall’s front yard to enjoy the games.”
Despite losing a player in the final minutes of the match due to a double-yellow card, a steadfast Uruguan defense managed to hold France to a lackluster 0-0 draw. The first game of the 2010 World Cup between host country South Africa and Mexico also ended in a draw (1-1).
Tomorrow’s 11:30 am match between England and America, also to be broadcast live at Civic Center, is expected to be a more spirited affair. England is expected to win the contest, according to William Hill.
