Tomorrow, my partner Teddy Strawser and I will be taking over operations of Buck Tavern on Market Street. We want to invite you to drop by for food and drinks and hope you consider making our public house one of your local haunts.
Since announcing our intention to purchase The Buck, I have been excited to see additional segments of our progressive community drop in. This Fall, Drinking Liberally and several other informal progressive circles have found a home at Buck Tavern, and I am committed to continuing to foster these discussions as well as many others. In addition, our public house will be committed to supporting the grassroots efforts for social and economic justice that I have been associated with in this town for nearly 2 decades.

As someone with Irish heritage, I have long been fascinated with the role of the pub in Irish culture and politics. As a progressive, I am interested in testing how well pub culture can feed and grow democratic mass movements. San Franciscans sure do take our politics seriously. But the lack of an overtly political establishment in the City is a void that needed to be filled.
Not that every conversation will be steeped in serious political discourse. In case you didn’t already get the memo, Teddy and I are as committed to fun as we are politics, and with Teddy’s chicken suit, they won’t necessarily be mutually exclusive. From pub crawls to publicize MUNI service, to fundraisers for our favorite Burning Man camps, to Pride we’ll be there. And we hope you will be too.
The Buck was opened 3 years ago by Michael Gouddou and Mark Landregan. We respect the community that they’ve built here, a compelling mix of the LGBT community with the surrounding neighborhood, and we hope to add to it. Our vision is no less ambitious than our vision for San Francisco, where people from the most diverse communities come together for good times and to take care of one another.

Walked by at 10am and the joint was shuttered! How in the hell are we going to solve the world’s problems if I can’t get a drink?
Open early, the law allows you to serve from 6am until 2am, so use it. Patrons are not going to walk by and just slip money under the door, you know. If people ask, tell them that you cater to the fishing crowd.
Lastly, I expect to see a sign proudly hung behind the bar informing me that my bartender and staff are UNION and members of Local 2!
