As many as five people were sent to hospital this evening following a multiple shooting gunfight at Jones and Market streets in the Tenderloin neighborhood of San Francisco, an area known for narcotics dealing.
“There was a multiple shooting. We have four, possibly five victims,” said SFPD Tenderloin Captain Joe Garrity. “It is gang related. We have one gun in custody and one possible suspect has been detained. None of the injuries are life threatening.”
“This is not related to Pride at all,” Garrity said, responding to a reporter’s question.
Police and emergency crews were called to the scene immediately following the shooting at approximately 6:12 pm. An SFPD officer, who was involved in a routine traffic stop at Jones and Golden Gate Avenue, heard the shots, called in “shots fired” on the police radio, pulled his gun and successfully chased down one of the suspected gunmen, a witness said.
At least 7 shots were fired, according to several witnesses. Spent bullet casings were observed at the scene circled by yellow chalk. The suspected gang members fled the scene in all directions immediately following the gunfight, a witness said.
None of the alleged gang members “live or work in the area,” Garrity said.
An investigation is ongoing.
Update, 6/26: Police said two of the victims were targeted and three were bystanders.

The gunfire awakened me from my afternoon nap and I was able to get it together enough to go see the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band at the Fillmore.
