  1. Not surprisingly, opponents are miscasting the amendment as a “public power” initiative and raising alarms about the cost. And, worse, mainstream reporters are parroting their arguments, apparently without taking the time to read the amendment, much less to do a meaningful analysis that could help voters to make an informed decision in the polling booth.

    Over the years, journalists such as the New Yorker’s Elizabeth Kolbert and the New York Times’ Andrew C. Revkin have written excellent articles providing specific examples of what has happened and what will happen as a result of global warming. An exhaustive, award-winning series by UC Berkeley’s California Magazine (in early 2007, I believe) also drove the point home in clear, dramatic fashion.

    Which brings us back to the proposed Charter amendment. The issue is not what it will cost to make San Francisco a clean-energy city; the issue is the cost of not doing so.
