We really need to understand what it means to deny homosexuals from openly serving our country. With our growing vulnerability to terrorism, it is simply disgraceful, dangerous, and counter-productive to our national security.
But as is so often the case, common sense for the public’s interest is shoved aside by special interests who have a financial stake in the passage of Prop 23. That would be the oil companies who don’t want their product replaced with renewable energy. According to the Huffington Post, three out-of-state oil companies – Valero Corp. and Tesoro Corp of Texas and Flint Hills Resources in Kansas – are big contributors to Proposition 23.
What gives? We baby boomers remember all too well what retirement meant to our elders. It meant taking up knitting and updating wills. We saw a slightly bent, slower version of the vibrant people who used to inhabit those bodies.
We all know that Washington is a tough town, and decision-making is fraught with bribes, backroom deals, blackmail and palm greasing. Still, it was thought that the following areas would be those where our president would follow through on his promise to do what’s best for “ordinary citizens.” Now they’re not so sure.
Arizona’s governor recently had to call off a border conference scheduled to take place in Phoenix because Mexican governors planned to boycott it, saying that Arizona’s new immigration law violates civil rights and is based on ethnic and cultural prejudices. No mention is made of their citizens violating the laws of our country.
Winston Churchill once said that you can always count on Americans to do the right thing, once they’ve tried everything else. I only hope that we all wise up before it’s too late to repair the damages done to our bodies if we continue to shut out other healthcare professionals simply because those in the media shut them out of our news.
Most people who come to our country illegally simply want a better life for themselves and their families. They want their children to be educated, their health needs attended to, a chance at a decent job with a fair wage. But without endless resources, we cannot sustain our own citizens, much less those of the impoverished world. To how many can we offer unfettered support before we all sink to substandard lives? This may sound cold, but they are cold facts, and Americans increasingly feel they are on a rudderless ship without direction or a clear sense of purpose.
