Eight days after Ingabire’s arrest on April 21 in Rwanda’s capital, Kigali, a team of U.S. lawyers filed a civil lawsuit against Rwandan President Paul Kagame in Oklahoma City alleging Kagame ordered the political assassinations that triggered the Rwanda Genocide, costing one million Rwandan lives, and that he engaged in racketeering to control the vast natural resources of eastern Congo across Rwanda’s western border at a cost of six-million Congolese lives.
“I am proud to run to represent the diverse communities of District 10 on the Board of Supervisors,” Jackson, a Progressive, wrote in a statement released to FCJ. “It is a place my family has called home since 1966. My candidacy will focus on how we can make our neighborhoods safer and more family-friendly. Our district is in a place of transition, and we need responsible leadership that will carefully advocate for smart growth and good-paying jobs.”
Daly announced his intention in March to hold a primary election. Since then, the Progressive candidates we have spoken to have been less than enthusiastic about running a mid-campaign election, citing limited resources needed for the run-up to November election. But they did agree Daly’s tried and tested campaign prowess could prove invaluable in holding the District 6 seat firmly in the hands of Progressives.
Sparks, who is alleged to be aligning her candidacy with moderate-conservative political factions, including Plan C, took the opportunity in her response to FCJ to stir up the political pot among the front-runner Progressive candidacies of School Board President Jane Kim, Entertainment Commissioner Jim Meko, and Building Inspections Commissioner Debra Walker.
The traditional May Day observance took on a more heated tone, however, when protesters clashed at Civic Center with members of the Golden Gate Minutemen and Norcal Tea Party, conservative groups that held a counter protest in support of strict immigration controls including Arizona’s immigration bill.
“We write to call upon Major League Baseball to seek a new host city for the 82nd All-Star Game, outside the State of Arizona, unless that state’s law is repealed,” the letter states. “Arizona’s draconian new anti-immigration law, which unless repealed or invalidated by a court will be in full effect in July 2011, poses an unambiguous and direct threat to the liberty of millions of Americans who are Latino or who may appear to be of foreign origin-including Major League Baseball players and their fans.”
America’s homeland is repressively militarized and unsafe. Habeas rights, judicial fairness and other constitutional protections are ignored. Lawlessness prevails. Everyone is vulnerable. Freedom is at risk. Police state repression is deepening. Knowing the dangers is a wake-up call for action. Latino immigrants, people of color, Muslims, and anyone called a threat to national security are most vulnerable.
